Diisopropylphenyl 2nd Generation Grubbs Catalyst1

Process Strengths Weaknesses
CM -Highly efficient in reactions where ethylene is a substrate or product
-Low temperature (<50 °C) reactivity
-Hindered substrates
RCM -Ultra-fast in forming di- and tri-substituted olefins -Hindered substrates

 
nd Generation Grubbs catalyst only in the substitution pattern around its N-heterocyclic carbene aryl rings, but these bulky isopropyl groups have a dramatic effect on catalyst reactivity. The precatalyst initiation is much faster than other ruthenium systems in RCM2 and ADMET3 reactions, especially at lower temperatures (<30 °C). In CM reactions, this catalyst has been shown to provide higher turnover numbers in reactions where ethylene is a substrate4 or a product.5
